Dental Crowns FAQs
A dental crown is a tooth shaped covering that is used to strengthen and repair damaged teeth. Below are some of the most frequently asked questions that patients have about dental crowns.
What materials are dental crowns made of?
Most commonly dental crowns are made from ceramic or porcelain to provide the most natural result. That said, dental crowns can also be made from metal or porcelain fused to metal. The material is chosen based upon each patient's dental health needs and aesthetic preferences.
How is dental crown placed?
A dental crown is usually placed in two separate procedures. The first procedure involves the dentist removing a portion of the natural tooth surface and taking a mold of the tooth and surrounding teeth. Then, a temporary crown is placed until the second visit. During the second visit the dentist removes the temporary crown and places the permanent dental crown.
How secure is a dental crown?
Dental crowns are permanent restorations that are cemented in place. A crown can only be removed by a dentist, providing a secure restoration that allows you to eat, speak, and smile with confidence.
How long does a dental crown last?
With proper care, a dental crown will last between ten to fifteen years.
Will other people be able to tell I have a crown?
Dental crowns (especially crowns being placed on front teeth, which are more visible) are custom made to complement the size, shape, and color of your natural teeth. In most cases, other people will not be able to tell you have a crown.
